In the late 80s, Blue River Coatings, an industrial waterborne coatings firm, introduced a unique, water-based covering system to the experimental aviation industry. This non-hazardous, non-flammable system was safe for both users and the environment, and included a waterborne, polyurethane-type topcoat. However, the topcoat proved to be insufficiently flexible and started cracking, leading to Blue River's exit from the aviation market. Many aircrafts covered in the Blue River system and painted with a conventional topcoat are still operational today.
